What do soap operas tell us about coping? Have you noticed whenever a character faces a difficult problem there is always alcohol or a cigarette in hand? This is an example of poor coping!
Coping describes the many ways we deal with troublesome problem situations. Everyone has a different coping style whose goal is to reduce stress and conflict. There are good and poor coping skills. Good coping skills reduce stress without causing harm or repercussions. Examples would include: discuss a problem with a friend, work out in a gym or engage in a pleasurable hobby. Poor coping skills reduce stress temporarily and can have harmful consequences. The stress often returns and you are bewildered and no closer to finding a solution to your problem. Some examples of poor coping are verbal aggression, overeating, reckless behavior, avoiding painful feelings and substance abuse. Don’t dig yourself into a hole with poor coping
